Road Safety Reminder for the Week

LANE CHANGING
The Motor Vehicle Code of Guam Section 3314 states that a vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such a lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety. Never change lanes in an intersection.

USE OF THE CENTER LANE
An uneven number of traffic lanes is a standardized roadway design on Guam. Historically, this middle lane has been called Suicide Lane, Kamikaze Run, etc., due to unsafe and often illegal driving practiced here. It is actually a LEFT TURN lane and is only for turning left into or out of traffic. This lane is not to be used for passing and is not a safety zone for pedestrians. It is illegal to use the center lane for a walkway.

Some defensive driving tips for using the middle lane:

  • If there is a center lane, it must be used for all left turns.
  • Always signal your intent to turn left and don’t turn your wheels until it is safe to execute the full turn, because if you’re hit from behind or in front, the turn of your wheels will send you direction into the oncoming traffic.
  • Watch very carefully before entering the middle lane and before the turning out of it; look for cars coming up behind you or planning to turn in front of you into the lane.
